Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who is eligible to apply? All Company and participating Franchise restaurant, corporate and field employees, spouses or domestic partners of employees, and dependent children of employees are eligible. All high school seniors, regardless of whether or not they or their parent/guardian is employed at BURGER KING®, are also eligible to apply. Click here for specific eligibility criteria.

Q. How will I know that my application has been received? An email acknowledging receipt of the application is sent within 24 hours. The acknowledgment is sent to the email address provided when registering. If an acknowledgment is not received within 24 hours, please contact Scholarship America by email at burgerkingscholars@scholarshipamerica.org or call 507-931-8340.

Q. What are the details of the award?

  • BURGER KING℠ Scholars awards are awarded each year.
  • The number of awards will be determined by the funds available and the number of applicants.
  • Most scholarships are non-renewable awards of up to $1,000. Awards cannot exceed educational costs.
  • The scholarships can be applied to tuition, fees or books required for course load at accredited, two- or four-year colleges/universities in the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico (Note: Employees and employees' spouses or domestic partners may use awards to take enrichment courses at accredited institutions).
  • A student may transfer from one institution to another within their award year and retain the award provided the institution and their enrollment fulfill eligibility criteria.

Q. Can I apply every year for a scholarship? Awards are not renewable; however, $1,000 Employee-Based Track recipients may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility and receive up to a maximum of four awards (up to $4,000).

Q. Is there a deadline date for submitting applications? Yes, the application period is from October 15, 2018, through December 15, 2018. However, application submissions will be capped at 50,000.  If the cap is reached prior to the deadline, the application will no longer be available. After submission and the deadline date, students will continue to have access to their portal to view their submission, receive status updates and update profile information, but no changes or additions can be made to the application.

Q. Is a home-school student eligible to apply for the program? Yes, provided the student meets the criteria of the program.

Q. What are the selection criteria?

  • Academic achievements
  • Participation in school and community activities
  • Length of employment (enrichment awards only)
  • Work experience (James W. McLamore "WHOPPER" Scholarship only)
  • Financial information (James W. McLamore "WHOPPER" Scholarship only)

Q. Will the scholarship be taxable? Generally, the scholarship will not be taxable as long as it is used for qualifying expenses such as tuition, books and fees. However, a recipient should consult his/her tax adviser to determine whether or not it is taxable in his/her circumstances.

Q. How and when are checks issued?

  • Checks will be mailed to each recipient's mailing address.
  • Checks will be made payable to the institution only.
  • Checks will be mailed in early August to recipients.
  • Employees and spouses/domestic partners of employees of the BURGER KING® system pursuing enrichment programs can request when they would like to receive their award check during the academic year.
  • It is the recipient's responsibility to notify Scholarship America should the check not arrive within 30 days of an issue date.

Q. How and when will I receive notification?

  • All applicants will be notified via email in April 2019. Past experience indicates that emails are sometimes not received or successfully delivered. Be sure to keep your email address current in your student profile. Applicants are encouraged to contact Scholarship America at the phone number or email address below if a notification email is not received by May 2019.
  • Recipients will also receive formal notification via post mail.

Q. How to send my transcript? Transcripts must be uploaded with your application.

Q. What are the transcript requirements? A current, complete high school or college transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Unofficial or online transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course, and term the course was taken.
